DESCRIPTION
According to tradition, Ancient Ostia was founded in the 4th century B.C. as a military colony to guard the river mouth against seaborne invasions. The ruins are beautifully preserved and they provide an amazing glimpse into daily life in ancient Rome.
By the 2nd century AD, Ostia had become a flourishing commercial center inhabited by upwards of 100,000 people - the apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops of whom are still intact. Here one can enjoy the rare and peaceful roman silence, letting the crickets create a soundtrack for you to imagine the stickball games of ancient roman children.
The focal point of the excavations is the so-called Piazza delle Corporazioni, a magical square capable of evoking the city’s harbor traffic and frenzied economic activity of the past. Wonderful mosaics decorate the pavements of the square, providing us with a goldmine of information on the cities with which Ostia used to trade, the goods involved and the guilds working at the port. Among the most significant remains are those of the city's stone theatre, warehouses, and the oldest known Jewish Synagogue in Europe.
Across the street from the archaeological area of Ostia Antica is the “Borgo” (village) with the famous Castle of Julius II, erected over a military stronghold dating back to the 9th century.
