DESCRIPTION
Since ancient times, papal families and Roman emperors have frequented this area, many of them building residences here.
This tradition continues today with modern Romans using the area for refuge, with a special appreciation for the abundant vegetation, cool climate and strategic location away from the chaos of the city. The Castelli zone covers an ancient, fertile volcanic area that has offered a flourishing agriculture for thousands of years. Two lakes now occupy the former volcanic crater there – Nemi and Albano.
The Castelli Romani area is well known for its cuisine and locally-produced white wine called Frascati. You can duck into one of the local "Fraschette" to savor some of the finest olives, cheeses, roast suckling pig (a savory, boneless roast pork) and a whole array of typical Roman dishes. These taverns can only be found in this area and will provide you with a unique and delicious experience in the hills.
The Castles area is also renowned for its small towns nestled amongst volcanic lakes. One such town is Castel Gandolfo, where the Pope traditionally makes his summer residence, overlooking the lakes of Nemi and Albano. This modest town is packed with historic sites including the Church of St. Thomas of Villanova designed by the Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
After lunch we will return to Rome along the famous Appian Way, the very first military road in Ancient Rome.

➢ If you would like to have an English-speaking tour guide accompany you inside the sites, this can be arranged for an additional cost upon request. The guide will then narrate from the vehicle as well as inside each site
➢ Your driver is available to extend your tour for additional hours upon request
