DESCRIPTION
Your private English-speaking driver will pick you up at your accommodations to first head to Aventino, one of Rome’s seven famous hills, for an introductory panoramic view of the city that sweeps over its unique domes and sprawling ancient sites. The iconic Circus Maximus awaits you next; it is Rome’s first and largest sports arena that was used to host chariot races and athletic contests dating all the way back to 326 B.C.
Then on to the Campidoglio, also known as the Capitoline Hill, the most important of the city’s seven hills and the site of Rome’s first capital during the days of the Republic. Atop the hill lies a magnificent square designed by Michelangelo where many government offices are now held. The terrace there overlooks the Roman Forum and Via Sacra, Ancient Rome’s main thoroughfare, as well as ruins from the numerous temples and basilicas that stood tall during ancient times.
At Piazza Venezia you can observe the imposing Victor Emanuel Monument that commemorates the unification of Italy in 1870. As you continue along Via dei Fori Imperiali, built during the Fascist Period and flanked by ruins of the Imperial Fora, one can’t help but notice the Colosseum rising up in the distance. That is your next stop, where you can skip the lines at the entrance to travel back in time, imagining the cruel fights that took place here between gladiators and wild animals (pre-booked fast track tickets are optional but recommended).
After a lunch break (your driver will provide local food recommendations), reconvene on the Via dei Fori Imperiali for a closer look at the Roman Forum. There you will understand how the city got its name as the largest open-air museum in the world. You can also take in the nearby Palatine Hill where many Roman emperors resided.
Next on the agenda is a visit to the lively Spanish Steps and the charming Baroque treasures of the Piazza Navona. From there your driver will lead you to the Pantheon, one of the world’s best-preserved ancient buildings and another major landmark in Rome. The finale of your tour cannot be but a quick visit to the most famous fountain in the world, the Trevi, where you can toss a coin into the marble basin wishing to come back to Rome.
