Jewish Rome and Trastevere in Limo
Jewish Rome and Trastevere in Limo
Not many people know that the Jewish community of Rome is the oldest of the western world, having existed there since the second century BC; in fact, people living in the ghetto area claim to be the only true Romans left! Today there are about 15,000 Jews in the city.
Get to know Rome's deep Jewish history and Trastevere district
DESCRIPTION
The Jews, treated fairly well in ancient Rome, were confined to the ghetto by a papal decree in 1555 until Italian unification in 1870.
This tour allows you to visit the Jewish neighborhood in Rome with its characteristic shops and streets, the great Synagogue built in 1904 and the adjacent Jewish Museum containing important artifacts, precious prayer books and priceless manuscripts including the original document that established the ghetto.
Furnishings from Rome’s other small synagogues, called Scole (“schools” in the local dialect; there were five Scole: castigliana, catalana, siciliana, nova, and italiana) were brought inside to the lower level of the structure that is now home to the museum of Rome’s Jewish community. A series of important artworks are displayed there, including a collection of Roman silver from the 17th and 18th centuries, and fabrics from all over Europe.
Numerous records and other finds document and illustrate the two millennia of history binding the Jewish community to the city of Rome. The meticulously-decorated main floor is a large space with two naves on the sides. On the upper level is the gallery, or “matroneo”, reserved only for women.
The tour includes a visit to the so-called Trastevere district (the district across the river Tiber), with its many characteristic Roman roads and piazzas, as well as to the Tiberina island, connected to the mainland by two ancient bridges dating back to the first century BC.
