Crypts, Catacombs, and other underground gems in Rome
DESCRIPTION
The Church of the Bones is an entire church decorated with hundreds of bones used as adornments that originated from the Capuchin friars that stayed in the convent over the centuries. Visit the eerie Capuchin Crypt, one of the most impressive and unusual burial sites in Italy and probably the spookiest place in Rome. It lies beneath the Capuchin Church of the Immaculate Conception built in 1645. The crypt contains the bones of over 4,000 monks, many arranged into patterns or even forming objects such as clocks and chandeliers. Recent changes to the Capuchin Crypt will make your visit here even better than it could have been before. With the establishment of a Capuchin Museum you can now access Caravaggio’s magnificent ‘St Francis in Meditation’, as well as a whole host of artifacts that offer insight into the lives of Capuchin monks.
The Church of San Clemente, or Church of St. Clement, is famous for its layers of history that are literally piled one on top of the other – with three main levels covering 15 centuries, we see how effectively ancient materials were once repurposed. A good example of this is the now-visible medieval church that actually rests on the substructures of a Roman house from the first century AD!
A visit along the Appian Way is not complete without a stop at the Catacombs (San Callisto or San Sebastiano). These were used by the early Christians as underground cemeteries outside the city walls since burials within the city limits were forbidden. They were often situated on property donated by a wealthy individual, after whom the cemetery would be named. They were in use until the 5th century and were the burial site of many martyrs. The catacombs, which were not systematically explored until 1850, consist of a system of galleries of varying sizes with some of them more than 20 meters below ground level!
