Orvieto and Civita Shore Excursion
Orvieto and Civita Shore Excursion
This shore excursion gives you the opportunity to see how present-day Italians live in a medieval hilltop town alongside almost four thousand years of history!
Private shore excursion to Orvieto and Civita
DESCRIPTION
Your day begins from the port in Civitavecchia, where your driver will pick you up in a luxury air-conditioned Mercedes vehicle right at the gangway of your ship.
As you drive along the "Highway of the Sun", you can admire the beautiful landscapes of Italy’s central Umbria region before arriving at your first stop, the picturesque town of Orvieto.
This town is home to one of Italy's finest and most impressive gothic cathedrals. The church façade of the Orvieto Cathedral is thought to be nearly perfect, and the interior provides an equally striking feast for the eyes including the “reliquiario” Christian relic containing the Shrine of Corpus Christi and Signorelli’s fresco cycle that served as inspiration for Michelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. Explore the cathedral’s hallowed halls as you absorb the art, history and miracles of its religious legends. You will also want to enjoy the town’s sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards and fields - it is one of the best panoramic points in the area.
The rest of your time here can be spent curving through the town’s quaint alleys as you shop for famous Orvieto ceramics, artisanal jewelry and local food products or by simply relaxing in an outdoor café and absorbing the splendid medieval atmosphere.
After a short drive south from Orvieto, you will come to the real hidden gem of the day, the town of Civita di Bagnoregio. Accessible only by pedestrian bridge, this once prosperous medieval fortress town now counts merely 14 permanent residents! Also known as the “Dying City”, Civita was mostly abandoned in the 17th century when damage from earthquakes and erosion destroyed its architectural foundations. The newer part of town, called simply Bagnoregio, is where most current residents reside, though you will want to spend most of your time exploring the older, historic center. Here you can stroll the narrow streets and marvel at the existence of a place where time stopped several hundreds of years ago.
After visiting Civita we will start our return to Civitavecchia with memories that you will treasure for a lifetime.
