DESCRIPTION
Your day begins when your friendly English-speaking driver picks you up at the gangway of your ship at Civitavecchia, whisking you into the Roman countryside in search of its fascinating Etruscan history.
The Etruscans were an ancient people of miners, metalworkers and seafaring traders who, between the 8th and 6th century B.C., settled in the area bordered by today’s western Umbria, Tuscany and northern Lazio. They allegedly wrote “the first, great chapter of Western history” (stated by German writer Werner Keller) before the Romans took over, at which point the Etruscans seemingly disappeared. The Romans owe many of their ancient cultural traditions to the Etruscans including gladiator games, triumphal arches, haruspicy (a form of divination) and different symbols of power.
Explore this intricate history first in Tarquinia, just a 30-minute drive from the port and home to a necropolis (large burial ground) with one of the world’s best-preserved ancient tombs. Learn how the Etruscans rose to power in the robust Etruscan museum, full of well-preserved stone coffins known as sarcophagi and frescoes from the 6th to 1st centuries B.C. You may also want to check out the Palazzo Vitelleschi, an impressive feat of Gothic-Renaissance architecture.
Next you will visit Tuscania, another hill town rich in Etruscan history. There you may want to enjoy a relaxed Italian lunch at a local restaurant or wander the medieval center of town until you reach the Basilica of San Pietro, a 13th-century Roman basilica that sits atop the town’s ancient Etruscan acropolis. Afterwards, we will take you right back to your ship at Civitavecchia port and the images, stories and memories from these ancient Etruscan sites will stay with you long after you return home.
